Beyond the Basics: Skills Your Child Will Master on Their Strider Bike

Your kiddo’s learning doesn’t have to stay inside. They can stay active, get outside, and grow their Strider skills all year long! If your little one has mastered the basics of sitting and striding, they're ready for the next step. Follow along to learn how to take their riding from simple movement to an active, confident skill, and we'll show you how to support them every step of the way.

After your little one has mastered the basics of sitting and striding, they're ready to enter this new phase. Follow along to learn how to take their riding from simple movement to an active, confident skill, and we'll show you how to support them every step of the way.

What are Advanced Balancing Skills?

This is where the Strider journey really gets exciting! It's the stage where your kiddo moves beyond seated balance to actively master their feet-up glide and stand. In this phase of learning, your little rider will discover they can gain speed, pump their bike while standing on Strider’s Stand-On Footrests, and maintain advanced coordination and control. You'll see them begin to truly trust their balance and build muscle memory that will last a lifetime.

Your child will focus on advanced skills such as:

  • Gliding and standing on the footrests: Lifting their feet and coasting for longer periods while standing on the bike's footrests, lowering their center of gravity for better control.
  • Mastering leaning into turns: Learning how to lean their body and the bike to steer through corners and curves, instead of just using the handlebars.
  • Gaining speed and pumping: Developing a sense of momentum and learning how to use their body to propel the bike forward without touching the ground.

Parent Pro Tip

  • The key to this step is encouragement. As your kiddo gets more comfortable, encourage them to lift their feet a little longer each time they push off. Celebrate every second of a glide — it’s a huge step toward mastering balance!

The Strider Difference: Bikes for Advanced Learning

The right bike makes all the difference in advanced riding. The Strider 12" balance bikes and the Strider 14x are specifically engineered with features that encourage these Advanced Balancing Skills.

  • Stand-On Footrests: A key feature on the 12" balance bikes and 14x, these footrests are child-sized and properly positioned below your child’s hips to help them find their balance while standing. This maintains their center of gravity from sitting to standing and helps them prepare for future pedaling and advanced motorcycle riding.
  • Performance Geometry: The lightweight nature and expert-designed geometry of our bikes ensure your child has the maneuverability and control they need to build confidence. Each bike provides stability at various speeds, allowing a beginner to grow into a true expert.
  • The Strider 14x Advantage: If your child is ready to move up in size, the 14x is the perfect choice. It starts in balance mode, allowing them to easily and confidently transfer their existing skills to a larger bike that feels just like their old one. The familiar feel of a Strider bike removes any anxiety and prepares them for the ultimate transition to pedals in phase 3, Independent Pedaling.

Parent Pro Tip: Find a New Playground for Riding

While a flat park is great for basics, new environments encourage new skills!

  • Look for a pump track: These tracks are designed with small, rolling hills that are perfect for teaching kids how to pump their bike and gain speed without pedaling.
  • Find some gentle slopes: A slight, paved downhill slope can encourage longer glides, helping your child build confidence in their balance.
  • Explore new surfaces: Riding on packed dirt, grass, or even a gravel path will teach them valuable environmental awareness and problem-solving skills.

Beyond the Bike: Life Lessons on Two Wheels

The skills your little rider learns in this phase go far beyond the bike path. As they navigate obstacles, control their speed, and handle different surfaces, they are actively solving real-world problems. Every challenge they face and overcome builds confidence that they can handle new situations, not just on the bike but in life. The broader developmental skills they'll master are like lessons in a hidden curriculum:

  • Problem-solving: As they navigate obstacles, control their speed, and handle different surface conditions, they are actively solving real-world problems.
  • Advanced coordination: Gliding, pumping, and leaning into turns builds advanced coordination that will serve them in sports and other physical activities.
  • Environmental awareness: Learning how their bike reacts to different surfaces and slopes gives them a greater sense of their surroundings.

Ultimately, your child is learning to be a more confident, capable, and aware person. They are empowered to challenge themselves, overcome obstacles, and feel the immense pride of mastering a new skill. With the right Strider bike and your encouragement, their adventures are just getting started.
